Process of Making: Contents Page

This is the first step of my contents page, I added the letters U and W to create abstractness, this provides a background for the contents page. I also used the font 'century gothic' for the title of the page. I thought variation from the front cover was needed.

In this stage I added the articles in my magazine using the font 'century gothic.' I also made them bold to be as clear as possible.

In this step I added a black rectangle to make the title 'contents' look more visible. It also adds seperation to the lower part of the page, which contains the features. I made the artist bigger to fill the page.I also added the sub title 'main features.'

I decided to change the layout of my contents page as I thought it was a bit messy, I reduced the amount of features and used a different way of expressing the word: Contents. I also showed more of the artist and got rid of the microphone wire to allow space.

I decided to add another development step as I felt some changes were needed. I changed the colour of the word 'contents' and added a black shadow to give it some definition. I then decided to differentiate this page from the front cover by changing the background colour so an individual image is gained.

Process of making: Double Page Spread

 This is the first development of my double page spread, firstly I created my page size of 49.6 x 21. I then added the picture of my artist and positioned it accordingly.

 My second step was adding a line in the middle of the page to seperate them both. I also added a box for the artist name and quote. I then added a fade to the image from left to right











I added the magazine name and website in the top right corner. Then added the rest of the text boxes for me to then fill in with text later on. I added a blue box for the article to make the colours co-ordinate and I felt that text in this box would make it stand out.

 The last step was filling in the text such as interview, article, competition, I added certain effects to the texts such as bevel emboss, glows and shadows.

Process of making: Front Page

I added a masked image of the artist to an A4 sized sheet with a background colour dark blue, which is the same dark blue on my colour scheme. I also added black rectangles at the top and bottom of the page. At this stage I decided to add the biggest pictures to the front cover before the smaller details.

I added the artist name in red, in a graffiti type text. This reflects the genre of rap so it is suitable for the front cover. I also decided to re-mask the image to get rid of any untidy edges. The microphone wire was also removed as I thought I could make the page more spacious without it.

I filled the gap in my magazine with a few artists that are included in the magazine. With info on events, mixtapes etc. I also played around with the red and white in the artists names to make the text more diverse. I also added issue date, website and a list of artists included in the magazine in the bottom and top black rectangles. I also added a slight shadow to the artist to make him look more clear and centre of attention.

The final step was to make the magazine look finished and official. To do this I added a barcode, and a competition to win a pair of 'Dr dre beats.' I also made the 'U' and 'R' larger to make the phrase 'The official magazine' look more natural and effective in its position. I capitalised the the artist names as I felt it was more aesthetically pleasing and made the names larger to show their importance.

This is the photograph I will be using for my double page spread, the artist is facing the right so he is towards the audience. This photo is very appropriate for the double page spread as it is large and can be spread over the whole two pages. This image is under blue light so it also suits my colour scheme. This photo was taken on a mobile phone so the quality is a bit lower, but I can use effects to make the quality look less significant.

This image is similar to the image for my contents page. I will not use it to cover the whole page and I will mask the artist. I may flip the image so it juxtaposes the front cover. This photo was taken on a canon camera. I like this image because the artist has an angry look on his face, which shows that the photo is naturally of him performing.

This image was taken at an amateur music event where artists volunteered to perform, only a few photographs were taken but I got enough to use for my magazine. I think this image is perfect for a front cover. I have decided that I will mask out the artist and add him to a background colour. I think this will work better because it will make the artist central. I like this image because it is obvious the the performer is a music producer as he is holding a microphone. This photograph is also effective as the artist is facing the right, where the audience would be positioned. This shot also is a low shot, therefore making the rapper look dominant and over powering.

This is another photo that I could use for my front cover, the camera angle is a low shot, making the artist look in charge, but the artist is facing down which will not give off a positive representation. Rappers want to be presented as confident, therefore I will not use this photo for my front cover.

Choosing the Colour Scheme

The colour scheme is only being used for the front cover and the contents page. The double page spread will have its own look, to suit the content of the magazine.

Font for text

Century Gothic-

My chosen font the text in my magazine is Century Gothic. This font is very simple and appealing to look at. I think this font is perfect for a magazine because it is curved, and very thin. I chose this by narrowing my selection down to a few that I could use. The alternatives to Century Gothic: Times ten, Fairfield, Palatino and Electra

I am choosing this font for my front cover as it is not too over the top, which is quite common in a magazine. Most magazines tend to use a simplistic yet effective font. I like the use of the '/\' in this font as it gives the font a different look. This font is also quite futuristic, which reflects the genre of grime/rap. The second best font out of my possible font would be the graffiti font; this font appeals to my target audience, but I feel that using graffiti for my front cover title is a bit too obvious for a magazine type. I feel using graffiti would make my magazine lose its conventions of a magazine.

Artist Poses-Camera Angles

This artist is Mc Skibadee, he is wearing alot of jewellry such as rings and necklaces, he is holding a microphone and appears to be midway through a song. This looks like it would look good on the front of a magazine cover, as the artist is pulling a neutral facial expression and his pose shows that he is doing a gig/set.

This photograph is of Konan and Krept, upcoming grime artists. They are leaning over a balcony and the camera angle is a mid shot. I think this would be a good image for a double page spread as it is very wide and would fit nicely on 2 pages. Also the fact that they are both looking at something gives a sense of inspiration.

This photograph is of Devlin, he this is similar to the first image except he appears to be singing. This photograph would be good for a front cover or contents page as it is clear. The camera angle is a low shot, making the artist appear to be dominant and strong. I will use this research to help me find the right camera shots when taking photographs for my magazine. Now I can focus on ie doing a low shot to make the artist appear to be dominant.
